I have a special place in my heart for breakfast. I just love it. And the testament to a great breakfast spot is well executed Eggs Benedict. So when I went to Verbena Cafe over the weekend within the gates of Norton Commons and saw six different types of Eggs Benedict I got pretty excited:
And I’ll say it: the Ham & Swiss Benny was the best I’ve ever had. I made everyone at my table try it. The hollandaise was creamy and amazing. Hollandaise sauce is an emulsion of egg yolk and butter, usually seasoned with lemon juice, salt, and a little pepper. It’s simple but really easy to get wrong. The eggs were cooked perfectly, runny and rich, the Cherry Wood ham made me rethink Canadian bacon all together. Even the hash browns on the side were delightful: a combination of shredded and cubed potatoes, with a touch of garlic.
Verbena Cafe is located within Norton Commons, which sort of feels like you are walking onto a movie set when you’re in the community. They open for breakfast and lunch. If they can nail an Eggs Benedict, I’m sure the rest of their menu (PDF) will taste outstanding.
10639 Meeting Street, Prospect. Open Tuesday through Sunday, 7a-3p.
